About RoToTo

RoToTo socks are manufactured in Hiroyu, Japan, with each pair designed around a “lifelong consumables” ethos. Made with the combination of old and new manufacturing processes that bring together vintage American knitting machines imported to Japan in the early 1900s and modern materials and technology, RoToTo’s socks are the finest you’ll ever slip your feet into.

The brand avoids mass production and supports skilled, local craftspeople with a deep knowledge of their craft stemming from decades of work in the garment industry.

We’ve been wearing RoToTo socks for years and their comfort and durability are second to none. We’ve tested them during long hikes in the Northumberland hills; the choice of materials and quality of construction means they are tough and comfortable enough for all-day wear.

Equally at home in the city or on the trail, RoToTo socks will keep your feet looking and feeling good and will quickly become the socks you always reach for.

The RoToTo socks guide

If you’d like to know skip to a specific style of sock, here is a full list of what is covered in this article:

The brand also offers other products aside from socks, including hats, scarves and gloves. Those currently available are covered below:

RoToTo Socks

Double Face Socks

  • Materials: 80% cotton,15% wool, 4%polyester, 1% polyurethane
  • Weight: Heavy
  • Use: Daily, hiking, outdoors

RoToTo Double Face Socks form the centrepiece of each season’s collection and are the brand’s signature offering. They’re also the reason behind our decision to offer RoToTo at Those That Know. We first became aware of the brand through their Double Face Socks around decade ago and over a period of years wore them regularly on hiking trips in the Northumberland and Lake district hills. We’re yet to find a more durable or comfortable sock.

They’re the perfect sock to wear with boots or sneakers, whether in the hills or in the city. Feeling more like a sweatshirt than a pair of socks, their outer is made from Merino wool, known for its warmth and moisture wicking properties, and backed with a 100% cotton to produce a substantial but super-soft sock that will last for years.

Recycled Cotton Wool Daily 3 Pack Socks

Materials: 46% cotton, 36% wool, 8% polyester, 1% polyurethane
Weight: Mid-heavy
Use: Everyday, casual, formal

A new addition to the range of multipack socks that RoToTo offer are the Recycled Cotton Wool Daily 3 Pack Socks. The most premium 3 pack the brand offer, these socks are made from an environmentally friendly yarn that is a combination of recycled cotton yarn and recycled wool yarn.

The recycled materials used in these socks comes from both “fallen cotton” and “hanmou wool”. Fallen cotton is generated during the spinning stage in RoToTo’s factory in Shimane Prefecture, where the unused cotton waste is collected and turned into thick cotton thread. The wool comes from the collection of unnecessary wool products and cutting waste in Osaka and Senshu and returning the fibre to its original state. The socks come in a branded closable pouch.

Organic 3 Pack Socks

Materials: 93% cotton,5% nylon, 2% polyurethane
Weight: Mid

RoToTo offer a range of 3 pack socks that bring together some of their best-selling styles based around a particular colour or theme. Our most popular product at Those That Know, the Organic Daily 3 Pack Socks in Ecru, forms part of the collection.

These packs are the perfect introduction to the brand and the ideal staple for daily wear, whether causal or formal. Each pack contains, as you can imagine, three of RoToTo’s most popular styles in a neutral colour, such as beige, grey or brown. The styles included in each pack vary slightly, so be sure to check out all of the 3 packs we have in stock.

Taking comfort at home to the next level, they have a Nordic knit pattern on the outside that is available in a selection of neutral and bright colours and a super-soft brushed inner. The soles have subtle grips meaning that once your feet are inside a pair of these, you’ll never look at your slippers again.

We had lots of requests for smaller sizes in Comfy Room Socks, so for Winter 2022 we’ll be stocking small in this style.

Hybrid Crew Socks “Merino Wool”

Materials: 76% wool, 13% polyester, 8% nylon, 3% polyurethane

Use: Outdoor, everyday, sports, year-round

Merino wool is an amazing material. It’s soft and warm but also has moisture wicking properties that are utilised in the Hybrid Crew Socks to keep your feet dry and comfortable all day long.

A relatively new style from the brand, we’ve been wearing these socks since their introduction and they’ve quickly become one of our go-to daily socks. They keep their shape, colour and softness even after a year of hard wear and washing. Design-wise, RoToTo offers this style in block colours with a contrasting accent colour. They’re finished with some subtle branding on the toes.

Coarse Ribbed Oldschool Socks

Taking their inspiration from classic sports socks from the 60s, RoToTo Coarse Ribbed Oldschool Socks take everyday quality and comfort to the next level. These socks are the perfect pairing for your favourite pair of sneakers and come in white organic cotton with a variation of dual colour stripes. Their medium weight means that they’re extremely versatile and can be work at any time of the year.

Alongside the standard variant, Oldschool Socks also come in shorter lengths, ideal for wearing with shorts in the warmer months, and a longer full-length style.

Double Face Cozy Sleeping Socks “Extra Fine Merino”

Materials: 54% wool, 38% cotton, 7% polyester, 1% polyurethane
Weight: Medium
Use: Sleep

RoToTo Double Face Cozy Sleeping Socks are the brand’s first socks specifically designed for bedtime. These socks were created in response to complaints from people who experience cold feet in bed and don’t find wearing normal everyday socks comfortable.

With an inner made of extra fine merino wool and an outer made from organic cotton, these socks are super soft. Since these are socks for sleeping, there is no elastic in the opening, and the entire sock has a soft fit that hugs your feet without feeling constricting.

Guernsey Pattern Crew Socks

Materials: 87% wool, 8% polyester, 4% nylon, 1% polyurethane
Weight: Medium/heavy
Use: Outdoor, everyday, hiking, year-round

The Guernsey knit is synonymous with the classic fisherman’s sweater and RoToTo have taken the properties that made these knits suitable for long days on deck and applied them to their socks.

The Guernsey Pattern Crew Socks are made from an 87% wool mix, with a little bit of nylon and polyester added in to give stretch and flexibility. Available in a selection of block colours with a slightly longer length, these socks are warm and comfortable enough for daily wear.

Recycled Washi Pile Crew Socks

Materials: 52% polyester, 45% wool, 2% nylon, 1% polyurethane
Weight: Medium
Use: Outdoor, everyday, year-round

Washi is a type of manilla hemp and is the material used to make Japanese banknotes. In RoToTo’s typically innovative style, it has been used here to create the Washi Pile Crew Socks. The nature of the yarns mean that washi is an incredibly hard material to work with, so RoToTo used specialised vintage sewing machines in the manufacture of this style.

These machines, combined with the expertise of RoToTo’s craftspeople, results in a light-to-mid-weight socks that has bags of character and texture. A personal favourite of ours.

Brushed Blanket Crew Socks

Materials: 63% acrylic, 18% nylon, 10% polyester, 5% polyurethane, 4% wool
Weight: Medium/heavy
Use: Outdoor, everyday, year-round

Taking their inspiration from classic blankets, like those made by Pendleton, RoToTo Brushed Blanket Crew Socks are made from an acrylic mix that has, as you’ll have guessed, been brushed to create a soft texture. They come in neutral colours and are simply styled with a stripe at the ankle, a contrasting heel and two stripes at the toe.

The Brushed Blanket Crew Socks are a new style for us this year and we’re looking forward to trying them out as the temperatures drop.

Brushed Mohair Crew Socks

Materials: 51% mohair, 28% nylon, 14% wool, 6% polyester, 1% polyurethane
Weight: Medium/heavy
Use: Outdoor, everyday, winter

Taking things to the next level is the Brushed Mohair Crew Socks. Mohair is a material made from the wool of the Angora goat and is known for its durable and resilient properties, as well as its high lustre and sheen. It is also known for its insulating properties and its moisture wicking ability, meaning these socks are suitable for year-round wear.

Likely the most luxurious sock you’ll ever slip your feet into, the design keeps things simple with a single neutral grey colour and lighter grey stripe details.

Recycled Ribbed Crew Socks

Materials: 52% polyester 45% wool 2% nylon 1% polyurethane
Weight: Medium
Use: Outdoor, everyday, year-round

The Recycled Ribbed Crew Socks see RoToTo doing their bit for the environment by creating a sock made from 100% recycled materials. The starting point is a 2×2 ribbed knit pattern with a regular length, that is made from a wool, cotton and polyester mix. The wool comes from reclaimed clothing, the cotton from the discarded fibres from the spinning process and the polyester is REPREVE from Unfil, which is a certified 100% sustainable fibre made by recycling plastic bottles.

The work REPREVE do is really something special and we recommend taking a look at their website to see some of the amazing things they’re doing with repurposed single use plastics.

Denim Tone Crew Socks

Materials: 96% cotton 3% polyester 1% polyurethane
Weight: Medium
Use: Outdoor, everyday, year-round

RoToTo wanted to create a sock that looked indigo dyed but that didn’t leave marks on their wearer’s sneakers. To satisfy this, they came up with the Denim Tone Crew socks. These mid-weight socks are the perfect accompaniment to a pair of jeans or chinos and come in three indigo dyes, Dark Denim, Blue Denim and Ice Denim.

The textured feel of the socks is achieved by combining several different types of yarn during their construction, resulting in a mid-weight sock that is sturdy but breathable.

We’ve stocked these socks every season at Those That Know and they’re always one of our customer’s favourite choices.

How to care for your socks

RoToTo socks are durable and designed to be lifelong consumables. They’re resilient enough to take anything you can throw at them. To keep them looking and feeling their best, we recommend washing at 30 degrees on a normal/gentle cycle. Hang or flat dry your socks and, if you have to use a tumble dryer, avoid high heat.

Some socks, such as the Coarse Ribbed Oldschool Socks, have specific care instructions. If relevant, these can be found on the product pages for each style.

Turning your socks inside out and using a washing bag is recommended to keep your socks in pristine condition and ready to wear for years to come.
