H.E.S.
H.E.S. is an independent menswear label founded by Gregory Farmer, built around a series of mid-century inspired performance staples, made in small batches by hand in the UK. The label takes its cues from the golden age of leisurewear: the easy, functional clothing worn off-duty by artists, musicians, actors, surfers and ordinary people with instinctive style. Read more
The idea behind H.E.S. is simple: clothing should be relaxed, useful and well made, without losing character. Each piece draws from the past, but is not treated as costume or reproduction. Instead, familiar references from Ivy League sportswear, mid-century leisure clothing, surf culture and artists’ wardrobes are refined into everyday garments made to be worn often and kept for years.
The label began as Home Edition during the lockdowns of 2020, when Greg was working from a two-bedroom flat in South London with his wife and their four-month-old baby. After years spent at the helm of heritage brand Brutus, and later developing the archive-led work of Gregory Farmer Clothing, he found a gap in his own wardrobe. He wanted clothes that were comfortable enough for home, but still considered, structured and rooted in the references he loved. The first sports shirt followed, inspired by 1950s Ivy League button-downs.
As the collection grew, Home Edition became H.E.S. and the label developed into its own distinct world. Where Gregory Farmer Clothing is built around the precision of subcultural dress, H.E.S. is looser, more personal and more functional. It is clothing for movement, work, travel, home and days off, shaped by the practical demands of everyday life.
The collections continue to draw from Greg’s own surroundings and interests: surfing on the North East coast, Arnold Newman’s photographs of Picasso in the 1950s, Hayashida’s Take Ivy, vintage athletic wear, British utility clothing and the quiet confidence of well-worn everyday pieces. The result is a concise range of performance staples with depth behind them: shirts, leisurewear and relaxed layers that feel familiar from the first wear.
Production is central to the identity of H.E.S. Every garment is made in small batches in the UK by skilled makers, with patterns cut in the North East and manufacturing handled by specialist hands. Fabrics are chosen for feel, longevity and character, including high-quality end-of-line cloths that might otherwise go unused. Details are kept purposeful, from the cut and handle of the fabric to the buttons, trims and finishing.
H.E.S. is a love letter to British manufacturing and to the enduring appeal of useful clothing. Mid-century inspired, quietly technical and made by hand in limited numbers, these are everyday staples designed to be worn, lived in and loved for years.
